QUEER REPRESENTATION IN THE MEDIA, a powerpoint by me.
i wrote a paper with a more in-depth version of this argument, if you want to read it just send me a message!!! and please feel free to add your own commentary to this, i rlly want to hear other people’s opinions.
and don’t even get started on trans*phobia/cissexism
^^^Exactly what I was thinking
I love this work, but I think you underestimate the power of alternative media. Whilst not a character, George Takei is quite literally revered by millions and he has spoken against just about everything.
Hate, bullying, colour of skin, homosexuality. You name it, he probably fought the oppressors for it and he is loved by people of all kinds, and still regularly gets castes for all manner of things despite his age, race, sexuality and active rights campaigning.
I don’t think it matters as much, (though it still does have a minor effect) as we have people of all colours, sexualities etc etc appearing on our TVs every day.
Whilst Lily Aldrin’s bisexual feelings towards Robin are considered a joke, if you examine the way the audience is invited to laugh, more often than not you’re invited to laugh with her on the joke. You are not laughing at her, or at her expense.
I’m a bisexual male from a very unfriendly part of my country so I’m not trying to just throw my opinion in for the sake of doing so. In today’s society, we have to question further what Media is, because Social media is booming, people still read papers and our internet access itself is just a whole world of media and portrayal.
I like your presentation, I just thinks it’s not all that bad, sometimes. Because there are TV soaps like hollyoaks, (which does have an interracial ((Nigerian x British)) homosexual couple) are using the Gay tag too much, and there are more homosexual people than straight, and in seeing it you begin to realise how abstract it feels. There is something as too much of a good thing
The definition of the word Queer is weird/unusual, so I’m not sure if it’s the correct word to use. But honestly you’ve done some good research and work. I’m just trying to give an honest opinion not to insult.
